Breaks Interstate Park is located near the Virginia/Kentucky border and along the Russell fork of the Big Sandy River. The campground is open April 1 through October 31 and has 138 campsites in a wooded area.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Full hookup sites are also available. Cabins, cottages, yurt, a lodge and group camping are also available Each site has a table, fire ring and grill.
Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, showers, laundry facilities, trash collection and a dump station. There’s also a camp/park store, playgrounds, swimming pool, water park, basketball court, lake and visitor center in the park.

Outdoor recreation at the park includes hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, swimming, kayaking, birding, rock climbing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The Canyon Rim Zipline also lets adventurers soar over the river gorge and towering cliffs.

Breaks is a massive park with a very large campground that spans 4 spread out sections. It has a great mix of FHU and primitive camping available. Pricing is excellent starting at around $20 for primitive to $30 for FHU. Cell coverage is there but depending on where you are it may be 4 bars or 1, YMMV. We were in site D114 on the D loop and it varied from 3 to 1 bar for Verizon depending on where you were in the loop. Ours averaged 2 which was good for our hotspot and making calls. OTA TV was 4 Kentucky Educational TV channels but they were spot on clear, very good picture. Site D114 was above a water maceration plant that made a bit of noise but we didn’t mind. If you are sensitive to hums be mindful of that. It wasn’t distracting to us at all. Take some time to explore the area, about a 20 minute ride are a few areas where you can view elk, deer and bear. The elk viewing area is down a very rough road so be mindful of the vehicle you are in, trucks no problem. Low riding sedan, may want to do the elk tour which basically takes you to the same places. Firewood is cheaper than locally at $6 so just buy it there. The camp store is small but has everything you’ll need. The visitors center has a great display of local animals (all stuffed) and it has WIFI although I didn’t log in so I can’t comment on the connection. Its there if you need wifi for anything. Grocery/gas/restaurants are about 30 minutes away. The bathhouse in loop D is nice considering its a state park. It was clean everyday and had hot water and good pressure, what else can you ask for. That said, hooks on the walls would be nice to hang your towels/clothes on. Getting up the mountain can be a challenge if you have a big rig, be mindful of sharp switchbacks and use your gears to effect. Overall I give Breaks high marks for scenery, accommodations as a state park and local sites to see. If you are into geocaching then you’ll be surprised by the amount of caches in the area, more than you could possibly do in a long weekend.
My wife and I have camped at Breaks two times now, in June and October, 2022 in a travel trailer and will be returning in August and October this year, 2023. The park is a wonderful park, lots to see and explore and is maintained very well. Campgrounds consist of several loops, which are completely separate from the large swimming pool and relatively quiet and wooded. We have not visited the bathhouses as our site was full hook up and we used our camper bathroom. We were told by others that the bathhouses are very well kept. Lots of trails to hike and wonderful long range gorge and mountain views. Town of Grundy is 30 minutes away with Walmart and other stores. Town of Haysi is about 20 minutes and is very unique to visit. We highly recommend the park and campgrounds.
