Crabtree Falls campground offers 30 campsites (several walk-in and tent), and 4 cabins. Some of the campsites are located right on the Tye River. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grate. The 23 RV sites have water and electric hookups.
Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and hot showers. There’s also laundry facilities, game room, general store and playground.
Crabtree Falls – Area Recreation
The campground is about 1/2 mile from the base of the Falls, which is the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi. Outdoor recreation includes hiking, mountain biking, fishing, swimming, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
You may also like Sherando Lake campground. Mount Mitchell State Park also has 9 tent campsites.

I haven’t stayed at Crabtree Falls Campground but I have driven past it many times. Driving Crabtree Falls Highway (Rt. 56) to the campground is not for the faint of heart. If you come in from Rt. 11 in the West, you will have a winding, narrow and steep, mountain road to navigate. Long trailers are advised against. It a little better to come down from the Blue Ridge Parkway but still scary. Then there is the right hand hair pin turn into the park. Not fun even without a trailer attached. Coming in from the West on Rt.56 is less of an ordeal but a narrow and winding route too. The Falls are spectacular and can be hiked up but I wouldn’t take a long trailer or motorcoach to see them. There is also an old fire road that goes to the top of the falls but manly 4 wheel drive and nerve is needed to go that route.
Our family has visited Crabtree Falls Campground twice; spring 2019 and summer 2020. This place is a gem! It’s a bit out there, not too near groceries etc, but if you’re looking for a nice stay in the woods along a river, you’re in for a treat. The campground is under new management for 2020, and the new owner is very nice and excited to maintain a great campground. Dog friendly, kid friendly, adult friendly… Our favorite area is to camp near the river around T1-5.
I used to live in Richmond many years ago and would camp at Crabtree Falls Campground. I always the hike the trails and there is some great fly fishing streams in that area of Virginia. . It is a beautiful place to get away. I now live in Wisconsin,but we are planning a trip back soon. Love this place.
