Fairy Stone State Park Campground Virginia

Fairy Stone State Park Overview

Fairy Stone SP 004

Fairy Stone State Park is home of the mysterious “fairy stones” and it also has an enchanted campground with 56 campsites, 25 cabins, 4 yurts and a camping lodge.  There are 50 campsites with water & electric hookups. Group and equestrian camping are also available. Fairy spotting is a popular activity, particularly during campfires.

Fairy Stone State Park Campground has drinking water, flush toilets, showers, a dump station and campground host. Each campsite has a table, fire ring and grate.  The ‘yellow’ designated sites are for trailers, tents and RVS. The ‘green’ designated campsites are for trailers/RVs (no tents). Pets are welcome (on a leash).

The 4537-acre State Park is also well-known for the 168-acre Fairy Stone Lake that spills into Philpott Reservoir. A small dam and spillway separate the two lakes and does not allow for boat access from lake to lake. Only electric or paddle boats are allowed on Fairy Stone Lake. A boat ramp is also available and there are rentals for canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and rowboats. Other outdoor recreation includes canoeing, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, picnicking, hiking, biking, swimming, hunting and wildlife viewing.

The Legend of the Fairy Stone

Many moons before Chief Powhatan ruled the land, fairies frequented the area and often danced around the spring waters as fairies do. One day an elf visited the fairies and told them about the crucifixion of Christ. Upon the news of His death, the fairies became quite sad and wept upon the earth. Their tears eventually crystallized into beautiful cross-like stones all around the forest.  The fairy stones are actually made up of staurolite, which is a combination of silica, iron and aluminum. Together, these minerals crystallize in twin form, accounting for the cross-like structure. Staurolite crosses are found elsewhere, but nowhere else in the world are they found in such abundance as in the vicinity of Fairy Stone State Park.

Two other parks/campgrounds in the area include Salthouse Branch Park and Goose Point Park.
