i was there this past weekend a trip i planned for my husband for father’s day this was our 1st time there we was in 2 cars because of the kids and i was following my husband we accidentally went the wrong way down a road looking for a camp site this man comes running at the car i was in yelling stop and call me all sort of foul names with my kids in the car so i stopped he kept yelling how i was going the wrong way and calling foul names i told him this was my 1st time here and to please calm down my husband seen me stopped and backed up then the man went off on him my kids was crying it was crazy.(found out later he was one of the hosts of the campsite) we turned around and left that area we did find a campsite we could not find any staff for change to pay the fee so we had to put in $20 for the $14 camp fee we set up our tent and tried to enjoy the weekend i seen we forgot a few thing so i was going to run to the store that was a few miles down the road the gate was locked with no signs telling me why or when the road would be open to leave found out they close the road at 9pm and does not reopen till 9 am the next morning the next day i ran to the store thank goodness my kids are not in diapers!!! we had fun the next day hiking and swimming we stuck around late waiting for someone to bring back our change for the fee guess what no one did so my husband went down to the office to get it the name in the office said yes they had the over payment but his boss had it and was not there and he did not know when or if he was coming back needless to say never got our money got locked in and cursed out i will NEVER NEVER go back there again

This campground is beautiful. Please don’t be swayed by the bad review. My family has been going there for years and it’s always been an enjoyable experience. If you’re a first timer and might come in late make sure you have change or put a note in the fee envelope explaining you didn’t have exact change and you will come back the next morning and take care of the charges. Also we’ve never had a problem with a host, they’ve always been very helpful. They have the combination for the gate if you need to leave after it’s locked. This information is readily available. That’s why the hosts are there. If you should have a problem with one as the prior reviewer did then they should be reported, people are people and not all are nice and this needs to be brought to their attention. The facilties are awesome, nice clean bathrooms with hot showers. the sites are nicely kept and they have different activities for the kids. The hiking trails are great, and there are different ones for the more ambitious. The lake is great for swimming and kayaking. Truly a beautiful place.

  3. Morgan Sheets says:

The Best Camping in West Virginia, hands down. I have been going here for years, since I was a baby and now I am 48 and still take my family there every Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend and an eight day stay every July when the moon is full. No better place ANYWHERE.

  4. I have been camping here my entire life. There isn’t a year that goes by that we don’t make at least one trip to Lake Sherwood. I have seen many things change through my years of visiting The Lake, some good and some bad, but I wouldn’t stop going for anything in the world. It is the most peaceful place on Earth. Camp Hosts make you feel like family the first time that you meet them. It is secluded and perfect for the weekend, week, or month getaway. Love it here!

I have been camping here for years we love it wouldnt camp no where else, camp ground host on #3 at the forks of the road, would go out of his way to help you very nice people cant wait until next camp season

  6. Roger Crocker says:

Went to Lake Sherwood for the first time last summer. We are planning another trip for a week this summer. Loved every minute of it. Fishing was hit and miss but still had fun cannot wait to take my grandkids camping there. Campsites were not packed in close together nice and spread out. Checked some of the State Campgrounds out and have not found one that has come close to Lake Sherwood yet.

  7. Darryl Hoffman says:

I’ll stay away for sure. Sorry you had that type of Interaction

  8. Samantha says:

Is ther a bath house on the Mead section of the campground?

  9. Teresa Smith says:

A great place to camp! My family has been going there for about 30 years. We’ve NEVER had a bad experience. Employees and other campers have always been so friendly and helpful. There are signs on the gate of what time it opens and closes. They gladly give change back for overpayment. you may have to go to the gate at a more convenient time to get it, but they do make good on what they owe. Ignore the bad review.

  10. Audrie Mullins says:

I have been camping at Lake Sherwood since i was a month old. This place is my home away from home or my second home. I have always loved it here. Everyone here is so kind and the camp hosts are very helpful when you need information or any tools while you are there. I definitely recommend this place for camping.

  11. Melvin Deal says:

I am planning to come to stay on July 8th. and some information is sparse at best . I am handicapped and need a shower every day .We will be staying at the Loop pine section no 48 .. How close is the shower bathroom ? And also is there a store nearby that sells camping supplies such as ice and firewood ?? and other things as well Thank you in advance Melvin Deal

    • Hi Melvin,
Lake Sherwood campsite #48 is about 60 yards from the closest shower (Pine Run loop). You can also click on the ‘Campground Map’ button to get a layout of the campground and see where restrooms, showers, etc. are located. Also, Covington (VA) is the closest town (about 24 miles away) with reliable camping supplies, food, gas, ice and firewood. Although the camp hosts will also sell firewood at Lake Sherwood. Hope this is of some help!

  12. I understand the campground is non-electric; however, my husband uses a CPAP machine for sleep apnea. We have an inverter that we use for this purpose at night, is this permitted for nightly use in the campground?

    • Hi Sonja,

You’re correct in that the Lake Sherwood campsites do not have electric hookups. You can use generators up from 8am to 10pm. I’d recommend calling the campground directly if you have any other questions: 304 536-2144

  13. We just returned home from a 3 day stay .. And I only have a few concerns .. 1. Is the showers at the campground have nothing to sit on while showering , I only have one leg and its VERY dangerous to try to stand on one leg in a shower.. You could get sued over this .. Im not going to but you kno there are people that would .. 2. They really need some type of store that carries milk and eggs and other supplies like this .. I kno they do have some things in the canoe rental place but not enough …. And just one last thing .. the posts they have to hang the lanterns on are way too high . I actually burnt my arm when I hung my lantern . You cant light these lanterns 9 feet in the air .. We will be back for shure tho its so peaceful even had a visit from yogie Bear and Boo Boo.. To anyone that reads this I say please stay here .. Its camping at its best .

  14. Cheryl Harper says:

Is there a place to rent camping trailers near the camp ground?

  15. Eddie StClair says:

We have been camping here for the past 50 years and this is our #1 place to stay. Our children were basically raised here in the summers and now they are bringing their children here. This is a wonderful place for families. Would suggest an easier way to make reservations, is my only complaint!

  16. Greg Smith says:

Staying in the Meadow Creek loop. Anyone know where the water spigots are located in this loop?
