  1. Joseph Comfort says:

We camped at Red Creek Campground the last weekend in August w/a Overland Trailer and RTT. It was a very nice site, with soft grass cover and level gravel pad. Privies were clean and there is enough vegetation between sites that you do not see your neighbors. Arriving at 5:00pm we were surprised to find that two sites were still available and happily occupied one.

There must be very little for people to do in the surrounding areas – at 3:15 AM the camp was drive-thru buzzed by a car-load of folks honking their horn and flashing their lights. I happened to be awake on a call of the wild and clearly flashed my headlamp on a dark colored Dodge Charger. Honestly, this un-nerved my companions and kept the campsite unsettled for the balance of the wee hours – another camper got in their vehicle and “did a drive around” at 3:30 and another vehicle entered the campground – returning to their site at about 4:00. We’re not sure that the returning vehicle wasn’t a party to the original prank. Had they elected to stop for a better look at me, they would have seen my pissed-off expression and a stainless steel .357 magnum.

While we all want a peaceful wilderness experience and expect that all others want the same, this is an “off the grid” wilderness with very limited cel signals. Considering your personal security options, measured against your equipment needs and pack weight isn’t a wasted thought exercise. A little disappointed that there is not a season-round “camp host” as there is in the GWNF North River Campsite in VA. Dolly Sods is well-travelled and heavily used, so it’s not out of the question for a resource.
