Badlands National Park Overview

Badlands National Park in South Dakota offers many striking geologic features and contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. The Park’s 244,000 acres include an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets live.

The Park has 2 visitor centers including the Ben Reifel Visitor Center and the White River Visitor Center. There are also two campgrounds including Cedar Pass and the Sage Creek Wilderness Area.

Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation includes hiking, biking, horseback riding, car touring, picnicking and wildlife viewing. You can also visit the Fossil Preparation Lab and engage with real live paleontologists. Last, but not least stargazing is spectacular with regular night sky viewings scheduled by park rangers and astronomy volunteers.
