Bears Ears National Monument Overview

Bears Ears National Monument includes a diverse and striking landscape in a remote high-desert area of Utah.  The monument is named after a pair of distinctive towering buttes and the name of the twin buttes is the same in each of the native languages of the region: Hoon’Naqvut, Shash Jáa, Kwiyagatu Nukavachi, Ansh An Lashokdiwe, or in English: Bears Ears.

Bears Ears National Monument includes red rock, juniper forests, high plateau and an abundance of early human and Native American historical artifacts.

There are three main BLM areas you can visit within Bears Ears National Monument:

Indian Creek

Indian Creek is a scenic corridor along Highway 211 where visitors can enjoy a number of recreational activities. Climbers flock to this area in the spring and fall to test their skills on some of the best crack climbing routes in the country. Birding is also good with opportunities to see raptors like Golden Eagles and Peregrine Falcons. Campgrounds in this area include  Hamburger Rock, Superbowl and Creek Pasture.

Cedar Mesa

Cedar Mesa and Comb Ridge are large landforms located in the southern portion of Bears Ears National Monument. Hiking and backpacking are popular in the rugged routes through the deep gorges of Grand Gulch and the many canyons within Comb Ridge.

San Juan River

The San Juan River winds through some of the most spectacular views in canyon country. It also passes by an abundance of natural and cultural resources.  Boaters (with a permit) can enjoy the San Juan River by raft, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or packraft!

Other Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation includes camping, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, river rafting, picnicking and riding off highway vehicles.  Wildlife viewing can be great and stargazing is also the bomb. There are also many cultural and historic sites to visit.
