Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park Colorado

Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park Overview

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is in western Colorado and features a deep gorge carved by the Gunnison River. The area is well known for its natural features, plateaus, buttes, deep canyons, and colorful rock layers. It is also adjacent to the Southern Rocky Mountains, a province known for massive mountains and valleys in between.

Camping

The park has two campgrounds for overnight accommodations. Campsites at South Rim can be reserved and North Rim campsites are first-come first serve.  Although not within the park, you can access East Portal Campground (down at the river) via El Portal Road.

Recreation

Popular outdoor recreation includes hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, fishing, stargazing and wildlife viewing.  Rock climbing is also popular. The Gunnison River is for experienced kaykers and rafters. The Chukar Trail put in in Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area offers an intermediate rafting run.
