Chaco Culture National Historical Park

Chaco Culture National Historical Park New Mexico

Chaco Culture National Historical Park Overview

Chaco Culture National Historic Park features ancient Ancestral Puebloan structures not seen anywhere else in the American Southwest. The massive structures/ruins were home to thousands of people who lived here between 850 and 1250 CE.

Camping

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park and next to petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling and ancient inscriptions. There are 33 single-family campsites.

Two group campsites are also available, each accommodating 10 to 30 people and no more than 5 vehicles. Group stays are limited to seven days at a time.

All unreserved campsites will become a “First Come, First Save” basis; please inquire for availability at the visitor center when you arrive.

Campsites 12-16 are for RVs (tent camping not permitted). All other sites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a table, fire ring/grill. There are no trees or shade structures to offer shade. Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and a dump station from March through October, then vault. Cell service is not available in the area.

Area Recreation & Activities

Visitors can camp at Gallo Campground, and explore Chaco Canyon through guided tours, hiking and biking trails. The park service also offers campfire talks, and night sky programs. Chaco Culture National Historic Park was officially designated an International Dark Sky Park on August 19, 2013. You can also visit the National Park Service website for more information.
