Great Smoky Mountains National Park Overview

Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee and features an amazing diversity of plant and animal life. It is also famous for its spectacular mountains and Southern Appalachian mountain culture.

The park encompasses over 522,000 acres, divided almost evenly between North Carolina and Tennessee. It is also the most visited National Park, averaging about 11 million travelers per year.

Camping

Thee park has 13 developed campgrounds with a total of about 1,000 campsites.  These include 4 equestrian campgrounds and 1 group campground.  More than 100 backcountry campsites are also scattered about the park. Cabins and picnic facilities are also available to rent.

Area Recreation & Activities

Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, picnicking, auto tours, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. There are also over 90 historic structures throughout the park including houses, barns, outbuildings, churches, schools and grist mills.
