Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests Idaho

Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests Overview

Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests encompass 4 million acres of beautiful and diverse land in north-central Idaho. The forests are best known for their wild character with nearly half located in designated Wilderness. They also sport three rivers popular with thrill-seeking floaters—the Selway, the Lochsa and the Salmon.

The Lolo Pass Visitor Center is a prominent landmark along Highway 12, the Lewis & Clark Highway. It offers displays and information on the Lewis and Clark journey across the Bitterroot Mountains and the 1877 flight of the Nez Perce Indians. It also provides historical, natural, and general information about the area.  The facility includes an interpretive center, small book store & gift shop, 24-hour restrooms, a covered picnic area, picnic tables and short interpretive trails.

Outdoor Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation includes camping (over 70 campgrounds/cabins), fishing, boating, rafting, kayaking, hiking, hunting, horseback riding, picnicking, water sports, swimming, mountain biking and much more. Wildlife viewing is also fantastic with opportunities to see a variety of forest creatures.
