Point Reyes National Seashore California

Point Reyes National Seashore Overview

Point Reyes National Seashore is located about an hour’s drive north from the San Francisco Bay area. It features 4 back-country (hike-to) campgrounds including Coast Camp, Glen Camp, Sky Camp and Wildcat Camp.  All four back-country campgrounds can only be accessed by hiking, riding bikes or a horse.  Parking for day and back-country use is at the Bear Valley Visitor center.  Exit Bear Valley Road (west) from Highway 1. There is also a boat-in campground available on the westside of Tomales Bay.

The Seashore offers spectacular hiking and biking trails through dense forests and grasslands and along expansive sand beaches and coastline.

Coast Camp

Coast Camp has 14 back country campsites on an open grassy bluff about 200 yards above the beach.  Equestrian facilities are also available for horse campers. Coast Camp has drinking water and vault toilets. Each campsite has a table, food locker and BBQ grill. The easiest hike to Coast camp is starting from the Laguna Trail just past the hostel and continues for 1.8 miles to the campground. You can also hike/bike to the campground on a relatively flat 2.8 miles on the Coast Trail.

Glen Camp

Glen Camp has 12 primitive tent-only (walk-in) campsites and 3 group sites in a wooded valley protected from ocean breezes. The hike to the campground is through a dense forest. The easiest approach is 4.5 miles via Bear Valley Trail (Five Brooks Trailhead) and Glen Trail. To access Glen Camp by bicycle, start at the Five Brooks Trailhead, follow the Stewart Trail to the Glen Trail, then north to the Glen Camp Loop, and finish by descending to Glen Camp. This is a strenuous 10 km (6 mile) bike ride.

Sky Camp

Sky Camp has 12 primitive tent-only (walk-in) campsites and located on the western side of Mt. Wittenberg. Campsite #2 has two camping areas (2A and 2B) for groups. The campground has a vault toilet and drinking water. It has a sweeping view of Drakes Bay and the surrounding hills of Point Reyes. The hike to Sky Camp starts at the Sky Trialhead and continues for 1.5 miles (walk or bike) on a gradual uphill trail. Each campsite also has a table and BBQ grill.

Wildcat Camp

Wildcat Camp has 7 primitive tent-only (walk-in) campsites and 3 group sites. The campground is located in an open flat meadow on a bluff overlooking the ocean. The short walk to the large sandy beach offers spectacular views of the coastline. Wildcat Lake is also a short walk from the campground. Our favorite Wildcat campsites are 5, 6 and 7.
