San Bernardino National Forest Overview

San Bernardino National Forest is located in both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.  It includes eight designated Wilderness Areas covering 151,341 acres, as well as the Sand to Snow National Monument and Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. It also has 3 Wild & Scenic Rivers, Deep Creek Hot Springs, Scenic Byways and other special places

The forest is divided into three areas designated as Ranger Districts.  These include Mountaintop (Fawnskin), Front Country (Lytle Creek) and San Jacinto (Idyllwild).  The forest also has several visitor centers operated by forest staff and partner organizations.

Outdoor Recreation & Activities

San Bernardino National Forest has hundreds of miles of nationally recognized hiking trails, seven designated Wildernesses, 42 campgrounds, four winter recreation resorts, seven wild and scenic rivers, the two tallest mountains in Southern California, and one of the best destinations for off-highway vehicle riding. Other activities include fishing, water sports, horseback riding, mountain biking, backpacking, hiking, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
