Tahoe National Forest Overview

Tahoe National Forest is located in the northern Sierra Nevada (east of Sacramento) and extends from the foothills across the Sierra crest to the California state line. It includes more than 850,000 acres of public land intermixed with 350,000 acres of private land in a checker board pattern.

Camping

There are designated/developed campgrounds as well as dispersed camping areas in some areas.  Most campgrounds are reservable with single family, group and cabins available. You can stay up to fourteen days per year within each family campground.  Exception: In the Truckee River Corridor, State Route 89 south, there is a limit of 14 days per year for the entire corridor between I-80 and Tahoe City.

Outdoor Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation in Tahoe National Forest includes camping, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, horseback riding river rafting, kayaking, swimming and wildlife viewing. There are also over 500 miles of trails for motorized vehicles.
