Theodore Roosevelt National Park Overview

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is where the Great Plains meet the Badlands in western North Dakota. The 110 square mile park is a habitat for bison, elk and prairie dogs. It is also where President Roosevelt once lived in the “Maltese Cross Cabin”.  The colorful Painted Canyon is also a popular attraction as is the Scenic Loop Drive which winds past several overlooks and trails.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park – Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation includes backpacking, hiking, horseback riding, biking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, picnicking, camping cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, The park is also a great place to check out the night sky. The Dakota Nights Astronomy Festival is an annual event.

The park has two campgrounds. Both have single-family campsites and group camping. Cottonwood Campground has 76 campsites, 1 group and 12 walk to/boat to. Juniper Campground has 50 campsites and 1 group site. The Roundup Group Horse Camp also has equestrian camping (up to 20 people and 20 horses).
