Dairy Springs Overview
Dairy Springs campground has 30 campsites set among a beautiful grove of ponderosa pines close to Mormon Lake (seasonal) and about 24 miles south of Flagstaff. Group camping is also available.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (18 to 40 feet). Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grate. Campground amenities include drinking water and vault toilets. There’s also campfire program at the amphitheater during the summer months. Cell service is poor.
Diary Springs – Area Recreation
Three hiking trails originate at Dairy Springs, one at Double Springs. Those trails lead to scenic overlooks of nearby Mormon Lake and the surrounding area of prairies, forests and volcanoes. Wildlife watching and birding are also a popular activity in this area. The scenic little mountain resort village of Mormon Lake is conveniently close to the camp, offering horseback rides, mountain bike rentals. You’ll also find a country store, service station, and a picturesque cowboy steak house there. Bike and boat rentals are available in town of Mormon Lake.
Double Springs campground is another option and is only about a mile away.

We stayed one night in site #13. It’s a lot more open than the picture would make it seem. We arrived and set up at about 3pm and the sun beat down on us until about 4pm, when it finally ducked behind the trees and things started cooling off. The site is close to a restroom, so we had some foot traffic, but the other campers were polite and passed quietly. The restrooms closest to us had an overpowering ammonia smell – I’m not squeamish about pit toilets, but I don’t like having my nose hairs burned off. The well water tasted fine, but had a slight brownish tint. Some of the other sites on the west end of the campground looked much nicer. Unfortunately these are first come, first served only. Firewood is available from the campground host. Kindling was a bit sparse at site #13, but there was some dead fall over by the amphitheater and we carried a few sticks back with us. A couple of trails start at or near the campground and the Arizona Trail passes through the area, so this is a pretty nice place to take a stroll in the woods. We didn’t have any trouble with mosquitoes at the camp site, although we did get eaten alive when we went down around Mormon Lake in the morning.
My family stayed for 4 nights at campsite #12. It was a beautiful area, safe for the kids to roam a bit without getting into other campers sites. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. They cleaned the bathrooms daily. The host had both firewood and ice available on site. There is water available, but we didn’t drink it as we had brought our own water, but didn’t have a smell to it or look bad as I did use it to clean our dishes, etc. There are several trailheads near the back of the campsite which were all very family friendly trails. Overall a positive experience that I would recommend.
