North Rim – Grand Canyon National Park Overview
Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim Campground is open mid May through October (reservations recommended) with 90 mixed-use campsites among a beautiful ponderosa pine forest. There are 78 campsites for tents, trailers and RVs (12 to 40 feet), as well as 12 additional tent-only campsites.
The tent-only sites are ‘walk-to’ and range from about 20 to 200 feet from parking area. Each tent site can accommodate up to 6 people. Three group campsites (tent only) are also available. The group sites can have up to 3 vehicles and 25 people per site (Group A, Group B or Group C). Maximum vehicle length in each group parking spot is 12 feet. Most campsites have nice shade from large ponderosa pines. Each campsite has a table, fire ring and grate. There are no hookups.
The campground borders Transept Canyon, a side canyon that drains into the main canyon, providing a stunning view for the premium campsites (23, 24, 25, 26, 29 and 31). Most of the campsites have parking pads that will accommodate trailers/RVs from 21-27. There are several in the 15 foot range and all tent sites will accommodate vehicles up to 12 feet. There are also ten sites with larger parking areas (40 foot maximum), including: 12, 13, 17, 20, 23, 24, 32, 53, 55 and 71.
North Rim Campground is within a mile of the North Rim Visitor Center/Grand Canyon Lodge. The campground has drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, a laundry and an RV dump station. Trailers and RVs can fill up their tanks with potable water at the dump station. Firewood is also available for sale from the campground host or at the general store. A gas station is also located close to the campground.
North Rim – Grand Canyon National Park – Recreation & Activities
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon offers less crowds, incredible views and miles of hiking trails. You can hike the North Kaibab Trail 14.2 miles down to Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground, but Backcountry permits are required for overnight hiking/camping. During the winter months, permits are also needed for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Day hikes on any of the 13 trails do not require a permit.
The North Rim also has a beautiful visitor center, gift shop, general store, and canyon trail rides (during the summer). The Grand Canyon Lodge also provides overnight accommodations, a restaurant and other amenities. Keep in mind that all North Rim facilities are closed from November 1 through mid May. During the off season it is open only from dawn to dusk.
Other campgrounds in the area include Demotte Campground and Jacob Lake Campground. Demotte has 38 campsites and Jacob Lake has 51 campsites. Both are within an hour of the North Rim and along AZ 67. And Indian Hollow Campground offers 3 primitive campsites in a remote area about 47 miles from North Rim Campground.

Does anyone the actual length of site 48 at the North Rim campground?
Hi Stuart, North Rim campsite #48 has a 27 foot maximum vehicle size. It is a pull-thru/parallel parking area and looks a little longer than 27 feet to me though.
I just booked this site – our trailer is 24 feet and we have a Ford150 (about 19 feet) – will we fit?

I have a reservation for site 10, which has a max RV/Trailer length of 27 feet. My travel trailer is 22 feet and I tow it with a 21 foot long truck. Will I fit both?

Campsite #10 is a pull through site and your 22 foot trailer and 21 foot long truck will fit in the parking area.

Was looking at visiting the park in July 2021, we are tent campers with 2 dogs. Are there any trails with in the park that allow our pets?

Pets/dogs (even on leash) are not allowed on any trails within Grand Canyon National Park (North Rim area included). You’ll need to go outside of the park to hiking on trails with your dogs. Sorry about that.
The Bridle Path trail from the North Rim campground DOES allow dogs. (See NPS map)

Is there any place to leave a car overnight at the North Rim if you do not have a camping reservation that night? We are planning to day hike Rim to Rim in October and shuttle back to the North Rim the following day. We have a campsite for night 1, but not night 2 b/c we will be on the South Rim.

Way to go on your upcoming R2R hike in October. A grand adventure awaits you! Just mind “the box” if you get a heat wave.
Anyway, yes there is overnight parking on the North Rim for hikers. Overnight parking is available (limited spaces) at the trailhead (see pic) and also at the North Rim Lodge. However, the Lodge parking is about 2 miles from the trailhead (if you don’t know the short cut, which trims about 1/2 mile off). Shuttles (from North Rim Lodge to North Kaibab Trailhead) are available, but I’m not sure if they will be running when you do your hike. Typically it operates May 15 to Oct 15. You may try calling the North Rim to confirm.

Will campsite #56 accommodate a small RV (roughly 25ft)? I see it shares a driveway with #58 and has a max vehicle length of 15 ft, but the driveway appears much longer than that in the photos I have seen. Anyone know? Thanks!

I agree – the paved parking pad for site #56 looks to be closer to 32-35 feet long. Not sure why they indicated on Rec.gov that only a 15 foot trailer or RV is allowed. Here’s the note from Rec.gov:
This site can accommodate a tent or an RV or vehicle up to 15 feet in length. If you have an RV, your door may open towards the road, and not into your site, since all campground roads are one-way. If your equipment is longer than the stated maximum length for this site, we will not allow you to occupy this site and we will NOT be able to move you to another site. Sites are not level so RV’s should come prepared with leveling equipment. RV’s with hydraulic leveling jacks must bring pads (wooden squares) with them to prevent jacks from damaging asphalt.
I have a reservation for the North Rim CG site 14 in October. The recreation.gov website states it has a max RV/Trailer length of 27 feet. My travel trailer is 27 feet and I tow it with a 22 foot long truck. Will I be able to fit both in this pull through site? The photo for site 14 looks promising, just want to confirm.

Campsite #14 has a big parking pad (pull through) and your 27′ trailer and 22′ truck should fit fine there. Have a great time – it is a really nice campsite.
Hi, We are staying on site 21 at North Rim. Our camper is 16 feet, one foot over the size requirement. Will we be turned away? Do they measure?

Your vehicle and trailer (at 16 feet) will fit fine in that pull-thru campsite. Typically they will not measure unless they feel it is way over the length limit. That’s a nice campsite – have a great time!
I did not find any photos of the group campsites. Are there trees in the group sites as well just like the normal sites? Also, is a group of 8 people allowed to reserve in the group site?

The North Rim’s three group campsites (A, B and C) can have up to 3 vehicles and 25 people per site. Having 8 people is okay. We have a photo of Group Site A (below) and the other group sites look about the same.
We’ve reserved sites 47 and 51 on consecutive days in October. I noticed that max trailer length for both is 27 feet. Do you happen to know if we can fit our 25 foot trailer and 19 foot tow vehicle in those sites? Thanks.

We have multiply families gathering at a North Rim group site reservation. One of the families will be traveling with a small pop up to use at other campsites along the way. Ideally, they’d like to just use the camper in the vehicle parking area of the campsite. Would that be ok? Even if they would just use a tent when at North Rim Group Campground can they still park the popup with their car at the site? If not, what other options are there for them?

The North Rim group sites can have up to 3 vehicles and 25 people per site (Group A, Group B or Group C). Maximum vehicle length in each group parking spot is 12 feet. I see no mention of not being able to park a small popup in one of the parking spots, as long as it is 12 feet or less. You could also try calling the North Rim to double check: 928 638-7888
I have a reservation for Site #34 that has a pull through driveway of a maximum of 27′. My trailer is 22′ and my vehicle is 18′. Will I fit in this site?

You’ll be fine with your 22′ foot trailer and 18′ towing vehicle in North Rim campsite #34. There is a maximum 27′ foot length on a trailer or RV.
Trying to plan a upcoming RV trip to N Rim. I have a 40ft RV & will be flat towing a Jeep Cherokee (17 ft). Anyone know if any of the sites would be able to accomodate this length (I have no problem disconnecting the Jeep if needed)
Hi, sorry if you have answered this before. We just reserved site #36 in the fall. Like other sites, the description lists a max RV length of 15′. Based on the site’s photo, it appears a larger rig could be accommodated. We have a 25′ class C. Do you think we will fit? Many thanks!

That’s a good question. Campsite #36 is one of our favorites. It’s a pull through and (as you noted) it allows for TWO vehicles – no more than 15′ each. With that said, your 25′ class C would fit on parking surface. I’m just not positive on what the camp host/ranger may say. I’d lean towards that they would okay it, but can’t be sure. Here’s the info on that site (Rec.gov):

Thank you for the reply. Yeah, it’s a risky move to drive all that way, only to be denied by a grumpy ranger. Judging by the photo, it look totally fine. BTW, I’d love to see this mythical 15 foot RV they built these sites around.
have just reserved site #69 for end of September. Have a 29′ trailer with one small slide that am hoping will fit. Truck is standard length F150. Will this work?

Campsite #69 is a large pull through. Rec.gov indicates maximum vehicle length of 27 feet, but since your F150 is less than that both your truck/trailer will fit fine. With that said, occasionally a ranger/host may have an issue with your trailer being longer than what is allowed (per vehicle).
I have a 29’ class A, when I reserved the spots (58,62) the website seemed to say we would fit. Now it seems to say we won’t fit.
I can’t get through to someone at the campground. Will I fit in one of these?

Not sure if I can give you a definitive answer. For site #58, Rec.gov says you can have up to two vehicles at 15′ maximum length each. That tells me that a 29′ RV will fit. It is a pull through site that share the driveway with site #56. Site #62 is also a pull through with a maximum RV length of 27 feet. It is also a pull-through site. Hopefully you can reach someone at North Rim campground to confirm before you get out there.
Hi ranger. Know what the website says, but hoping to get a first hand answer. Had reservations for site #69 (27’) but now have a trailer that is 29’. Hopefully the pull thru site will accommodate it, plus have the F150. Also, can we fill the fresh water at the dump station?

First, you can fill up your water tanks with potable water at the North Rim Campground’s RV dump station. Campsite #69 is one of our favorites. It’s a large/level pull through site. As you know, the maximum vehicle length is listed as 27 feet, but that parking spur can handle your F150 and a 29′ foot trailer. I doubt the ranger/camp host will throw a flag on your 29′ trailer. Hope it works out!
I saw site 68 is one of your favorites. I noticed trailer length is 15 ft. We have a pop up – 20 ft when open that we pull with an Expedition. Tough to tell if we will fit based on pic of sight. Any assistance is appreciated

Campsite #68 has a very long (pull through) parking spur that will fit a 20 foot pop (when opened) and your Expedition. The reason they have 15 foot trailer has a maximum is that there are trees on both sides (and close to) the parking spur. A much longer trailer may not be able to make the turn when pulled through the parking spur. With that said – your setup should work fine.
PLEASE HELP. We have reservations in less than a week at the campground there and the info on length for RV trailer is confusing. Our trailer is 19’ and we also have a full size truck (RAM 1500). Our site number is 52, which shows 21’ “combined” length. Will this work!? Thanks!!

Sorry for delayed response. Campsite #52 has a maximum vehicle length (trailer or RV) of 21 feet. You can have two vehicles (truck/trailer = 2 vehicles). Looking at the photo it appears you’d have room to fit both (with all wheels on pavement), but may have to angle your truck a bit. The final say is from the ranger/host at the campground.
Hi Ranger, we have a 30 ft Class A RV and most sites seem to suggest 27 feet for each vehicle (2 max). Would I be able to get just my RV (30ft) in without a 2nd vehicle? Thanks, Eric

They are getting a little strict on size limitations at North Rim campground. I probably wouldn’t push trying to get a site with a 27′ limitation.
There is a new “alert” on the reservation page for the North Rim Campground that says the max length allowed is actually the combined length of the TV and the trailer. We have a 27 foot trailer and reservations for a site that allows 27 feet…will we be denied?

We see that alert too: Attention RV and Trailer campers: Maximum vehicle length listed under each North Rim Campground site is the COMBINED LENGTH of the RV/trailer and tow vehicle due to all sites being pull-through sites.
The ranger/camp host will make final call. Hard to tell how lenient or strict they will be . . . probably more on the strict side.
I’m hoping they update the campsite sizes (maximum vehicle length), because several of the campsites clearly have a much longer parking spur than is listed.
I hope they do too. Just sending an alert without updating actual lengths seems arbitrary. We have site 69 in 9 days and had assumed we were fine with your comments before (29′ trailer & F150). Hate to be turned away when the site would easily accommodate.

North Rim Campsite T5 is reserved for the rest of the season, as are all tent campsites. You can set up an availability alert (Campsite Assist) that will monitor for availability on the date(s) you want to camp. If/when a site becomes available you’ll receive a text and email alert with a link to try and reserve the campsite (asap). Hi, there seems to be a road along the rim called “group campsites” but on the official campsite map it shows the group sites as being behind the main parking lot and checkin. Do you know which is correct? Im trying to determine if there is any chance of views from those sites. Thanks!

That’s a good question. The group campsites (A, B and C) are located over by the main parking lot area/check-in as indicated on the map. The ‘Group Campsite Road’ used to go to the group camping area but that (area) was converted to the 12 tent-only (walk-to) campsites. The tent-only campsites can accommodate up to 6 people per site. The group campsites (A, B, C) can accommodate up to 25 people per site. There is not a view of the Grand Canyon from the group camping area. Some of the 12 tent-only sites do have a view of the Grand Canyon – like Tent Site #6.

Excellent info in this site. We have a Tacoma that is approx. 17 feet long and a Teardrop that is 15 feet long. We reserved site #77 in two weeks. Site says 15 feet. Will we be turned away? Thanks.

Your Tacoma and Teardrop trailer will fit fine in campsite #77. That’s a nice large pull through site – you should really like it. It actually can fit a larger rig (and towing vehicle). Not sure why they only have a 15′ limit on a trailer. They will not turn you away . . . good to go, and have a great time.
