Andrew Molera State Park Campground California

Andrew Molera State Park Overview

Andrew Molera State Park Ocean

Andrew Molera State Park Trail Camp has 24 (hike-to) campsites in a meadow near the Big Sur River and about a mile from the spectacular Big Sur coast. Campsites are nicely spread out and for tent camping. Sites 1-2 are designated for hike/bike campers. The parking area is about 1/4 mile to the campground.

The popular campground often sells out and is open mid March to mid October. Campground amenities include potable (drinking) water and restrooms with flush toilets. Each campsite also has a table, food storage locker, fire ring and grill. Firewood is also available to purchase at the camp entrance. Each site can have up to 1 vehicle (in parking area) and 4 people. Parking for a second passenger vehicle is not guaranteed.   When space is available in the parking lot, a second vehicle may be registered, and an extra vehicle fee will apply. Cell service is poor in the area. Dogs are not allowed in the park. Check in is 2pm and check out is at noon.

Andrew Molera State Park – Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, beach combing, photography, picnicking and wildlife viewing. You can also kayak from the mouth of the Big Sur River to the ocean. Accessing the river from the campground is not possible (fencing and heavy brush). Hiking and biking trails from the parking lot can access the 2.5 miles of pristine beach within the park. Biking riding is also popular on Highway One (but be careful).

You can also take a short hike to see the historic Cooper Cabin. J.B.R. Cooper was a Monterey Sea captain who purchased the Mexican land grant (known as the Rancho El Sur), in 1834. The cabin was actually construction by George Austin, a Massachusetts native, in 1861.  The structure originally served as a dwelling for Cooper’s ranch hands but later converted int a barn.

You might also like Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park (9 miles south).
