Kennedy Meadows Campground Inyo National Forest California

Kennedy Meadows Overview

Kennedy Meadows 027

Kennedy Meadows Campground has 37 campsites and is located along the banks of the South Fork of the Kern River in a remote area of the Southern Sierra. The campground is first-come, first-serve.  The summer can be very hot (90 degree temps) and the river water quite low (more like a very small creek).

Campsites 28 to 37 are next to the river with other campsites scattered among juniper and pinion trees.  Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 30 feet). Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grate. Amenities include vault toilets. Although the campground has water spigots, potable (drinking) water is not available and there are not any trash services (please pack out). Overflow parking is also available. There is no cell service in the area.

A general store is located about 3 miles from the campground. It also has gas.  Other campgrounds in the general area include Fish Creek (11.5 miles from campground) and Troy Meadow (13 miles away).

  1. I’m a regular camper, hicker and fisher at Kennedy Meadows campsite. I’ve been trying to find information on the river flow this year to see best time to fish the river along the PCT…my favorite part of the trip.
Does anyone know where I can find that info?

    • Hi Michael,
The flow is very high – around 6,000 CFS. Best place to check is dreamflows.com. Then click ‘California/Nevada’, and then “California West Sierra/Southern”. Scroll down until you see ‘North Kern Above Fairview Dam’. This gauge is several miles below Kennedy Meadows area, but it’ll give you a pretty good idea of the flow up at Kennedy because the river eventually reaches Fairview.
