Silver Creek – Truckee Campground Tahoe National Forest California

Silver Creek – Truckee Overview

Silver Creek 008

Silver Creek Campground is adjacent to the Truckee River at an elevation of 5,900 feet in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There are a total of 28 campsites for tents, trailers and RVs (up to 32 feet). Each has a table, fire ring and grate. The first loop (1-8) is a paved loop (campsites are gravel) with some huge pull-thru sites (1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8). The rest of the campsites are on another paved loop with gravel campsites (with no pull-thru sites). Campsites 22-28 are the walk-in / tent only sites).  The hike (from the parking area) to the walk-in sites ranges from about 50 feet to 300 feet. The campground has drinking water (water spigots) and vault toilets. Firewood is also available for sale from the campground host.

Silver Creek – Area Recreation

Silver Creek Campground is usually open mid-May to mid-September and offers a great base camp for some excellent fishing along the banks of the Truckee River.  The town of Truckee is 8 miles to the south and Tahoe City (and Commons Beach) is 7 miles to the north.  Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. You can also do some swimming and tubing in the Truckee River.

Other campgrounds in the area include Granite Flat, Donner Memorial State Park and Goose Meadows.

There are also two other campgrounds down by the lake you may want to check out – Tahoe State Recreation Area and Lake Forest.

12 Comments on “Silver Creek – Truckee”

  1. Is there any where I can tent camp in Tahoe today February 6, 2019? I can get an Acess park pass.

    • Hi Leah,
Silver Creek campground is open mid May through September. There’s about 15-20 feet of snow on the ground this time of year and most of the facilities are probably deep under snow.

  2. Hi,

How long of a walk are the walk in sites? (Distance from parking area)

    • Hi Lindsay,

Silver Creek campsites 22-28 are the walk-in / tent only sites.  The hike (from the parking area) to the walk-in sites ranges from about 50 feet to 300 feet.

  3. Hi. I’m curious if there are park rangers at silver lake creek campsite? My daughter is going there and I want to know if there are safety precautions.

    • Hi Hannah,
Silver Creek campground is a nice family campground and there is a Camp Host that maintains a spot in the campground. The host does provide minor safety/security checks and is in contact with the US Forest Service (ranger) if needed. There is not regularly patrols of the campground by the rangers. Hope this helps!

  4. Torry Slaton says:

Is there a single water source for all campsites? Or are there water faucets throughout the campground? Is it possible to fill up trailer’s fresh-water tank upon arrival?

    • HI Torry,
There are water spigots scattered throughout the campground. Each site does not have its own water. I’m not sure if filling up RV water tanks with fresh water is allowed. Perhaps someone knows and can comment here.

  5. rickcoraldesign@aol.com says:

    1. Was silver creek campground effected by the past year fires. 2. At camp site 18 can my 23′ airstream trailer fit in space and is there space for Travel vehicle? Thank you

    • Hi Rick,
Silver Creek Campground is now open, so there was no fire damage. I’m not sure how close the fire did come to the campground though. Campsite #18 has a parking spur of 30 feet (with a little overhang), so your 23′ Airstream will fit, but I’m not positive your other vehicle will. If you can get your Airstream all the way back (tires against back wood border), I think it’ll work for you.

  6. Can my 17 year old (nearly 18) stay at a campsite if they have a parental note?

    • Hi Rick,
I believe so, but you may want to confirm with someone at the USFS Truckee Ranger District (530-587-3558), or the USFS Supervisor’s Office in Nevada City, CA (530 265-4531).
