D H Day Campground Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Michigan

D H Day Overview

DH Day 021

D. H. Day Campground has 88 campsites in a beautifully wooded and peaceful area of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The single-family campsites and group campsites are reservable May 1 through October 15. The campsites are first-come, first-served at other times of the year. Group camping is also available.

The campground offers a slightly more rugged camping experience and offers easy access to Lake Michigan’s beach from the north end of the campground. Amenities include drinking water and vault toilets. There’s also picnic areas and a visitor center. The nearest boat-ramp is 6 miles away. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grate. Cell service is good in the area.

D. H. Day Campground Area Recreation

Outdoor activities include boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, picnicking, hiking, biking and wildlife viewing. There’s also plenty of beautiful sand dunes to play on! Canoe and kayak rentals are also available in the town of Glen Harbor where you can float the nearby Crystal River. A boat ramp (Lake Michigan) is about six miles from the campground.

Platte River Campground is also nearby (about 18 miles to the south) and you may also like Burt Lake State Park or Lake Michigan Campground.

D H Day Comments & Reviews

Visited D H Day Campground lately? We'd love to hear about your adventure. Did you find us useful? Did we forget something? Anything our community should know before heading out to D H Day?

21 Comments on “D H Day”

  1. Debbie Walters says:

D.H. Day Campground is rated a 10 in my book. Our 15 day stay in the rustic sites was quiet, and relaxing. I love the new trail that takes you either to Glen Arbor, or Glen Haven. Past Glen Haven following the trail will take you to the dune climb. Rangers are superb! We love Ranger Ralph and his wife. We will be back for 15 days this August.

  2. Jerri schultz says:

I would like to book a reservation for Aug 10-17 but can’t find the right place to make reservations.

    • Hi Jerry, Recreation.gov was supposed to have the D. H. Day Campground single-family campsites ready for reservations, but it does not yet have the single-family campsites available on their website yet. I would recommend you call Recreation.gov directly at (877) 444-6777. The single family campsites should be available for reservations for stays between May 1 and October 15.

    • I emailed the NPS in Empire and they got back to me this afternoon- http://www.recreation.gov/ will have DH Day sites reserveable Monday April 1

  3. Do any sites at DH day campsites directly face the water? Thanks

    • Hi Aaron,
The closest D H Day campsites closest to the water are 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60 and 61. They are about 100 yards from the water, but bushes and trees will probably obstruct your view of Lake Michigan.

    • Those are the closest sites to the water and they’re correct—you cannot see the lake from them. Even without leaves on trees the view is obscured (though sometimes you can catch a glimpse!)
A lovely campground if you can get a reservation.

  4. KRISTIE MARIE DOUGHERTY says:

Is site 12 conducive to hammock camping?

  5. when or how early can you make a reservation for a campsite–like, michigan state parks are 6 months out?

    • Hi Tim,
Correct – D H Day campground reservations are released on a 6-month rolling basis during the season. For example, you can make a reservation on Dec 5 for June 5 arrival. Reservations open at 7AM PDT.

  6. Joanne E marshall says:

Do you know if you could fit a 25 ft RV on a 20 ft spot?

    • Hi Joane,
Most likely not for an RV. A trailer may have a little overhang space toward the back, but if the campsite has a maximum size of 20 feet, then a 25-foot RV probably would not be allowed. The camp host will make the final decision.

  7. Will a need a national park pass for group camping at D H Day?

  8. Heather Fitzgerald says:

Is campsite #23 quiet/not right next to a higher traffic area like restrooms or alot of RV’s? Is it a good one for a peaceful stay?

    • Hi Heather,
Campsite #23 is a nice/quiet site with good privacy and room between neighbors. There is a water spigot close to your campsite, but the traffic there won’t be an issue. Have fun!

  9. John Gunther says:

Will a 21.5 foot trailer fit on a 20 ft spot?

    Thanks
    John

    • Hi John,

That depends on the campsite. Some have room toward the back of the site for overhang. Your trailer needs to have all wheels in the parking space area and not extend out into the camp road. The final call comes from the camp host and/or ranger. I’d say you should be okay.

  10. MELISSA Kaye RHOADES says:

What are your thoughts on site #34? Also, I’ve been reading horrifying reviews about mosquitoes at Platte River Campground. Do you know if D.H. Day has less of an issue? Thanks.
