Cataloochee Campground Great Smoky Mountains National Park North Carolina
Cataloochee Overview
Cataloochee campground has 27 large single family campsites and is located next to a stream in Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Group camping and equestrian campsites are also available.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 31 feet). This area has been described as being among the most rugged in southeastern the United States. Be advised that the road to the campground is narrow, steep, winding and unpaved for about 3 miles.
Cataloochee campground has drinking water, flush toilets and trash collection. There are no hookups. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grate. Cell service is not available in the area.
All campsites have gravel tent pads and sites 1 through 20 have enough room for two autos, a camper and a rain fly, plus the tent pad. Sites 21 to 27 are only slightly smaller and a little closer together. A large stream flows along the rear of sites 3, 5, and 7 to 10. A smaller creek flows along the rear of 14, 15, 17, 18 and 19.
Once you get near the campground, the valley floor opens up into many lush meadows. This affords the opportunity to see an abundance of wildlife. There are many day hiking paths around the area and a number of old buildings along the way that are open with exhibits. Outdoor activities in the area includes hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, fishing, horseback riding and wildlife viewing.
You may also want to check out Balsam Mountain campground. It’s also in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is about 30 miles away via highway 276.
