Upper Pahranagat Lake Campground Nevada
Upper Pahranagat Lake Overview
Upper Pahranagat Lake Campground is located in the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge and has 15 (free) campsites located along the shoreline of Upper Lake. The rustic/primitive campground is open year-round. All campsites are first-come, first serve.
The campsites are generally spread out (except sites 13 to 15) and can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a table, BBQ pedestal, fire ring and grill. Campground amenities include vault toilets and trash collection (at entrance). There’s also a covered day use/picnic area near the campground and a Visitor Center at the southern end of the Wildlife Refuge. Cell service is also good in the area.
You may also like Valley of Fire State Park. It is about a 90 minute drive away and has two campgrounds (Arch Rock and Atlatl Rock).
Upper Pahranagat Lake Campground – Area Recreation & Activities
Outdoor recreation in the area includes bird watching, fishing (carp, bass, green sunfish and catfish), hiking, mountain biking, hunting, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. Stargazing is also great in the area. Non-motorized boats or boats with electric motors are permitted on Upper Lake from February 1 – September 30.
Large thermal springs north of the town of Alamo provide water for lakes and wetlands of Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge. The Wildlife Refuge offers wetland and riparian habitats for thousands of migratory birds, numerous birds of prey, deer, reptiles, small mammals and rare fish.
For those that are curious, ‘Pahranagat’ can mean “feet sticking in the water” in the Paiute Language.
