Post Pile (OR) Campground Oregon

Post Pile (OR) Overview

Post Pile Campground 004

Post Pile Campground is open year-round and has 7 spacious campsites next to the Lower Crooked River. All campsites are first-come first-serve and have great views of the river and nearby Chimney Rock.

The campground takes its name from nearby rock outcrops composed of basaltic lava. As these formations cooled, a multi-sided joint pattern formed which seemingly resulted in the appearance of a pile of posts stacked vertically. The geologic phenomena is known as columnar basalt.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a parking spur (ranging from 25 to 70 feet), table, fire ring and grill.  Campground amenities include a vault toilet and trash collection. Potable water is available year-round at the nearby Chimney Rock Campground, 1.3 miles north on State Highway 27.  Cell service is not available in the area.

Post Pile Campground is one of several BLM campgrounds along the Crooked Wild and Scenic River. You might also like Stillwater, Lone Pine, Palisades, Chimney Rock, Big Bend, Cobble Rock, Poison Butte or Castle Rock campgrounds.

Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The Prineville Reservoir is also nearby and is a popular area for boating, water sports and fishing.
