Hurricane Campground is next to two beautiful mountain streams and has 27 campsites set under the shade of hemlock and rhododendron in southwest Virginia. It’s just 2 miles off State Highway 16 but it feels much more remote.  Hikers can walk from their campsite to the Appalachian Trail and many other nearby trails.

The campground is generally open mid April to late October. Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, warm-water showers and trash collection. Firewood is also available to purchase from the camp host. Cell service is not available.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Two of the campsites are double sites and the rest are for single-family campers. A few of the campsites have a short walk from the parking area to the camp area. Each site also has a table, lantern pole, fire ring and grill. There’s also a large (groomed) grassy fields available for camping.

Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing.  From the campground, hikers can access many trails including the Appalachian Trail. This well-known trail extends more than 2,189 miles throughout the Appalachian Mountains across 14 states. It is a protected greenway and owns the title as the first National Scenic Trail.

Other campgrounds in the area include Old Virginia Group Horse Camp, Fox Creek Horse Camp, Grindstone and Raccoon Branch.
